Description
Working towards 100% renewable electricity
Most of Minneapolis’ past community-wide pollution cuts came from using less coal. Now we use more natural gas, wind, and solar power to make electricity. Electricity made up most of our emissions (46%) in 2006 and was the third-largest category in 2024 at only 25%.
In 2018, City Council set a goal: by 2030 our Minneapolis community would be powered by 100% renewable electricity. To be renewable, we need to collaborate with community and our utility partners. This looks like:
- Formal partnerships
- Franchise agreements
- Commitments to establishing a cleaner electric grid
- Supporting renewable energy production
Indicators
Indicators help us track our progress towards our goals. The indicators for this strategy are:
- Percent of Minneapolis electricity that is renewable and carbon-free
- Total annual CO2 equivalent emissions from electricity
What we’ve done
In 2015, we made a big step towards this goal. This was the first year of the Clean Energy Partnership. This is a formal partnership between the City and our utility providers, CenterPoint Energy and Xcel Energy. The purpose of the Clean Energy Partnership is to work together to make progress toward the City’s climate goals.
We also work with residents and businesses to incentivize solar and renewable energy production.
