Understanding Green space
Green space includes parks, grass, trees, and other plants. People can use these areas to play, relax, or enjoy the scenery. Studies show that being around nature can help improve mental health. In Minneapolis, you can find green space in our:
- Many parks, big and small
- Tree-lined streets
- Pollinator gardens
Climate impact
Most climate action focuses on lowering emissions, but green space actually absorbs carbon. Plants and soil store this carbon, which helps fight global warming. Green space also:
- Provides shade
- Helps clean the air
- Cools down hot areas in the city
- Soaks up rainwater
- Increases resilience during extreme weather
Equity impact
Increasing green space in our city improves the lives of all who live, work and play here. Green space helps our communities in many ways, including:
- Improving mental and physical health
- Offering spaces to gather and play
- Shading homes and lowering energy bills
- Bringing beauty to neighborhoods
- Offering spaces to grow food
Some neighborhoods have enjoyed these benefits more than others. This is why we are focusing our programs in green zones and areas with the least access to green space.
