Where our water comes from
In Minneapolis, the City provides water to all. We get our water from the Mississippi River and treat it at the Fridley treatment center to make it safe to drink. On average, pumps and pipes send 54 million gallons of water throughout the city each day. This is about 1 percent of the total river’s total flow. Homes and businesses use the water. After it’s used, the Metropolitan Council’s Pig’s Eye water treatment plant cleans it and returns it to the river.
Climate impact
Water treatment and pumping made up 4% of our total emissions in 2021. At the Fridley treatment center, we’re working to lower emissions. We’re doing this by only using renewable energy. As of 2023, the water treatment center uses 100% renewable energy. But the building still rely on fossil gas for heating.
Equity impact
We want everyone to have clean water processed with few emissions. Water treatment causes only a small part of our total emissions. But, clean water is a basic human need and should be affordable for everyone.
