Complete Streets are safer for all
Complete Streets are designed to make travel safe for everyone. They include people of all ages and abilities. Whether people drive, walk, bike, or use public transit, we want to make getting around easier. These ways of traveling save money and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Some people don’t feel safe in their neighborhoods or on public transit. When people don’t feel safe, they might drive more than they would otherwise. That’s why safety is a top priority as we work to improve travel options for walking, biking, and taking transit. In the future, electric vehicles can help reduce GHG emissions and pollution. This helps us all live healthier, create new jobs, and keep the air cleaner.
Climate Impact
Transportation made up almost a quarter of the city's emissions in 2021. Public transportation creates fewer emissions than personal cars. Walking or biking creates no emissions at all. If we use cars less, we can reduce emissions, cut down on traffic, and reduce air pollution.
Equity Impact
When we improve transportation so it’s easier to walk, bike, and use public transit, we help everyone. This also gives us a chance to fix unfair structural systems from the past and build a better future. You can learn more in the Racial Equity Framework for Transportation.
