About Resilience Hubs
Resilience Hubs are community-serving facilities designed to support community by:
- Offering shelter, power, food and resources during extreme weather or disasters.
- Acting as an information center, connecting residents to resources.
- Offering a space for people to come together.
These Hubs give people tools, support, and connections to handle challenges. They support people before, during, and after disruptions.
Partnerships are essential for establishing resilience hubs. In 2019, the City of Minneapolis began exploring this idea with community organizations. Two years later, Xcel Energy began the Resilient Minneapolis Project. Three Hub sites will install solar and battery storage microgrids to help keep the power on during power outages. This project helps people understand the technology used. It also gives them a chance to explore well-paying green jobs.
The three Minneapolis Hubs are:
- Sabathani Community Center
- Minneapolis American Indian Center
- North Minneapolis Resilience Corridor
Renewable Energy Partners is partnering with Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) on the North Minneapolis Resilience Corridor. This Resilience Corridor will include:
- MPS Nutrition Center
- Plant Maintenance and Operations Center
- Franklin Middle School
- Hall Elementary
What we’re doing now
The Health Department has hired staff to work on Resilience Hubs. We help partners work together, write grants, and give technical support. These first three Hubs will help establish a framework for how to develop Resilience Hubs. This can help others develop their own Resilience Hubs and join a Resilience Hub Network across the city.
Engagement:
Since July 2024, each Hub has hosted events to share updates and listen to what people want from the hubs.
Emergency Planning:
Each Hub aims to be a safe place during emergencies. City staff will work with each Hub to:
- Complete an emergency preparedness assessment
- Test current emergency plans against likely scenarios
- Develop updated emergency plans
- Train people on the emergency plans
- Share emergency plans with community members
