Description
Green space and trees
Green space in our city serves as a valuable space for residents to use year-round for recreational activities, getting around, and connecting with others. Few spaces have as positive an impact on quality of life as green space in neighborhoods.
Creating and maintaining green space in our city is a collaborative project. At the City, we have programs to help residents plant trees on private property. Meanwhile, the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board (MPRB) manages the majority of the public green space. A wide-ranging plan called Parks for All guides their efforts to improve parks. The plan states that MPRB parks:
- Rank as one of the top park systems in the U.S.
- Are within walking distance of 98% of city residents
- Hosts almost 27 million visits each year
- Has 600,000+ trees in parks and along public boulevards
- Includes 6,817 acres of water and parkland

Indicators
Indicators help us track our progress towards our goals. The indicator for this strategy is:
- Ratio of trees planted to trees removed on MPRB property

What’s happening now
At the City, our City Trees program works to increase the tree canopy on private property.

Planting trees and caring for them is the best way to maintain or increase tree canopy over time. MPRB plants and removes trees in public spaces within Minneapolis. Each year from 2021- 2023, MPRB added over 3,000 more trees than they removed.
