Description
Why insulation matters
Insulation is an important first step for improving a home’s energy efficiency. Like a blanket, insulation keeps a home at a more consistent temperature. It creates a barrier between the inside and outside air. This saves money by reducing how often heating and cooling equipment runs. Insulation is also an important first step in electrifying homes. Insulating homes ensures new heating and cooling equipment is as efficient as possible. An example of this is air source heat pumps. Air source heat pumps work better at lower temperatures provided by good insulation.
Many homes need insulation. We’re working alongside other organizations to get every home insulated.
Indicators
Indicators help us track our progress towards our goals. The indicators for this strategy are:
- Number of homes insulated through City programs
- Number of homes insulated through City programs by property type
- Coming soon: Number of homes insulated in collaboration with other organizations
What we’re doing now
We have programs that help residents add insulation to their homes. We make this accessible to residents by providing funding. We also fill in service gaps. The Healthy Homes weatherization program is an example of a program designed to fill gaps and serve more vulnerable residents. We’re improving this program through:
- Increasing funds available for insulation and other clean energy projects
- Broadening our outreach and community awareness
- Centering underserved residents in our program design
- Creating new programs that serve people left out
