Description
Stormwater management
Stormwater can rush along impervious surfaces, overwhelm pipes, and flood streets, lakes, and streams. Efficient and well-maintained stormwater systems make cities less likely to flood. They slow water and keep pollutants out of our lakes, rivers and streams. The parts that make up our stormwater management system are:
- Storm sewers
- Storm maintenance holes
- Catch basins
- Grit chambers
- Rain gardens and ponds
Some stormwater management facilities also help our city resist drought with native plants.
Stormwater management is only one part of improving system resiliency. As building efficiency standards change, so do the possibilities to conserve water. Designing buildings to use less water could lower emissions and resource use.
What we’re doing now
We’re improving our stormwater management system and improving resiliency.
- We’re working on flood mitigation throughout the city
- Incorporating best management practices in the design of transportation projects that disturb half an acre or more
- Using native plants in project designs when feasible
