Description
Commercial and multifamily buildings
Most greenhouse gas emissions in Minneapolis come from heating, cooling, and lighting buildings. About 65% of these emissions are from large commercial, multifamily, and industrial buildings. Working with these buildings can be challenging due to the numerous people involved, including the building owner, property manager, and tenants. We have several programs available to encourage sustainable choices. These programs are available to building owners.
We’re working with building stakeholders to:
- Share helpful resources and tools
- Understand and address challenges to making sustainable choices
- Find ways to save energy using new technology and teamwork
- Offer incentives through programs like the Green Cost Share program
Indicators
Indicators help us track our progress towards our goals. The indicator for this strategy is:
- Greenhouse gas emissions from industrial and commercial buildings in Minneapolis
What we’re doing now
We work with building owners through the Energy Benchmarking Program. This program requires building owners to share data on the energy and water they use every year. In 2025, the Health Department added staff to offer more support. They look for ways each building can use less energy and create less pollution. We also continue to work with local utilities to make the local electric grid cleaner.
