Description
Industrial emissions
Industrial buildings create greenhouse gases in different ways. The type of pollution depends on the type of industry. Sources may include:
- Heating and cooling buildings
- Boilers
- Powering back-up generators
- The industrial processes themselves
If a facility has an air emissions permit from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), it must tell the MPCA how much combustible fuel it uses. The MPCA calculates their greenhouse gas emissions from that data.
Indicators
Indicators help us track our progress towards our goals. The indicator for this strategy is:
- Greenhouse gas emissions from industrial and commercial buildings in Minneapolis
What we’re doing now
At the City, there's a lot of opportunity to work with industry partners to cut emissions. In the fall of 2025, we hired staff to work with industrial buildings. This position will:
- Conduct site visits to large and small industrial facilities
- Complete technical analyses of facilities’ processes
- Determine emission reduction project scopes
- Refer facilities to the Green Cost Share program
The first goal of this work is to cut down air pollution. This includes greenhouse gas emissions, from industrial facilities. Future goals will be to:
- Reduce solid waste
- Reduce hazardous waste
- Conserve water at industrial facilities
