Description
Lowering fossil gas emissions
In Minneapolis, CenterPoint Energy supplies all fossil gas. Fossil gas or natural gas has made up the largest part of our total emissions since 2017. In 2023, natural gas made up 43% of all our emissions. The next biggest sources were electricity and on-road transportation. We, the utilities, and the community must work together to lower emissions.
To lower gas emissions, our homes need to be more efficient. To do this, we need to use alternatives to traditional natural gas.
Common traditional gas appliances are:
- Heating systems
- Stoves
- Water heaters
Replacing gas appliances with electric options is more efficient. Electric appliances’ emissions are even lower when powered by renewable energy.
Indicators
Indicators help us track our progress towards our goals. The indicators for this strategy are:
- Percent change in greenhouse gas emissions from fossil gas since 2006
- Total annual CO2 equivalent emissions from fossil gas
What’s happening now
CenterPoint Energy filed an Innovation Plan through the Natural Gas Innovation Act. This includes natural gas decarbonization strategies that would lower emissions, short term. We can lower emissions even more if we grow these solutions in the coming years.
