Description
Housing energy burden in Minneapolis
Housing energy burden is the percent of household income spent on home energy bills. In Minneapolis in 2017:
- 12% of households had a "high" housing energy burden more than 6%
- 5% of households had a "severe" housing energy burden more than 10%
High energy burden can force residents to choose between heating their homes and meeting other basic needs. This can often lead to health issues as families are exposed to extreme heat or cold. Using generators or ovens for heat pollutes indoor air and can also cause health issues. We don’t want anyone to have to choose between safe heating or providing for their families. Our goal is to ensure no household has a high energy burden by 2030.
What we’re doing now
We help residents reduce energy costs by funding:
- Wall and attic insulation
- High efficiency heating and cooling equipment
- Other energy-saving upgrades
Our goal is to grow funding and capacity. We want to create more opportunities for residents to get help with home energy projects. These projects will help lower energy bills. Residents can get help to make home energy upgrades through:
- Rebates
- Loans
- Contracted services
